Back in the days, we only got a chance to eat pilau during weddings, events and on Christmas. Most times, the aunties with culinary expertise were invited in these events for the purpose of preparing the pilau.

In today’s time, anyone can prepare pilau thanks to the availability of recipes on the internet. Nevertheless, your pilau may not always turn out like that of your favourite cooking blogger or vlogger.

Onions

Where does pilau get its Colour? This is a question that lingers in many peoples’ minds especially among those who love cooking. The secret ingredient behind that question are onions. They tend to give pilau a wonderful brown colour. Therefore, don’t limit yourself with onions the next time you want to prepare some tasty pilau.

How to get colour in pilau

Pilau has a different colour outcome depending on how you want it. There are people who like really dark pilau while others prefer one with a lighter colour. Before you start cooking your pilau, know the kind that you want because the first stages are what guides whether you will have the dark one or slightly brown.

If you want the dark pilau, its advisable to heat your onions to dark brown if you want slightly brown pilau fry your onions to brown.

Type of rice

Light cooking pots are not recommended when cooking pilau. This is because, there is a high likelihood of your pilau getting burnt before it is well cooked. Opt for a pot with heavier materioal and cook over low to medium heat.

When cooking pilau, ensure you put enough oil.
