VIDEO: Man rescues child dangling from the 5th floor of Paris building
Just like Spiderman but without the red and blue spandex, a man in Paris has pulled off the extraordinary rescue of a four-year-old boy who was dangling from a fifth-floor balcony over the weekend.
Mamoudou Gassama took just 40 seconds to scale the outside of the building, using his bare hands to scale from balcony to balcony in order to reach the young boy.
Cheering onlookers filmed from the ground below as Gassama climbed up to the child and whisked him to safety faster than individuals who were on a balcony above him could reach the toddler.
While the rescuer’s effort received an applause from below, it also attracted the attention of the Parisian mayor Anne Hidalgo who wanted to know who “the Spiderman of the 18th” was – referring to the district the incident occurred in.
“A great Bravo to the (man) for his bravery that saved the life of a child last night. I was pleased to speak with him today by telephone, in order to thank him warmly,” she said in a tweet translated from French to English.
“He explained to me that he had arrived from Mali a few months ago, dreaming of building his life here.
“I replied that his heroic gesture is an example for all citizens and that the city of Paris will obviously be committed to supporting him in his efforts to establish himself in France.”
Gassama leapt into action after he saw the child dangling from the building and he heard people shouting and car horns from the street, according to a Buzzfeed report.
Local media states the child’s father was taken into custody following the incident and said he left the child alone with the balcony door closed, while he went to go shopping.
