12 people died yesterday while many others were injured in a deadly road accident at Kivwe village on Siakogoi-Embu highway.

The 12 were among 61 passengers onboard a Ketno Sacco bus. The driver of the bus lost control after the brakes failed and the bus rolled several times before plunging into Thura River. 11 people died on the spot while one died while undergoing treatment.

Witnesses say that several of the victims, most of whom were elderly, were relatives from Gangara, Ndutori and Kivwe villages who were on their way to Siakago in Mbeere North Sub-County to register for the Inua Jamii cash transfer  programme.

This is not the first time that the market is on fire as it has continued to experience fire outbreaks in recent months.

According to Mbeere North police boss Kivinda Kilonzo, the police are yet to establish the exact number of survivors.

“If it’s satisfied, they will amend the emergency use approval earlier issued and advise us accordingly.”

Speaking after the accident, former nominated MCA Rose Mutuuri, urged the government to have registration centres in the village to save the elderly from unnecessary travel.
