Day Secondary School Fees in Mathira Scrapped to Zero, Says MP Eric Wamumbi

Day Secondary School Fees in Mathira Scrapped to Zero, Says MP Eric Wamumbi

In a move aimed at expanding access to education and supporting families in Mathira Constituency, Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi has announced that all secondary day school fees in the area will now be free of charge. This decision eliminates the previous termly charge of KSh 1,000 that parents were required to pay for their children’s education in public day schools.

The initiative, branded “Mathira Masomo Kwa Wote”, seeks to remove financial barriers that have historically kept some students out of school or forced others to drop out. Wamumbi explained that the new policy means that no parent will be asked to pay any form of tuition for day secondary learners across the constituency. He emphasised that, besides abolishing fees, the programme will also ensure schools are adequately staffed and resourced to support student learning.

According to the MP’s office, the free education plan is intended to benefit over 12,000 students in Mathira. Funding estimates for the programme range between KSh 48 million and KSh 54 million, which will also support improvements in school infrastructure, particularly science laboratories and learning facilities.

Wamumbi’s announcement comes shortly after Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro introduced a subsidy that reduced day school fees in his constituency from KSh 1,000 to KSh 500 per term under the Masomo Bora programme. Wamumbi responded to this development by inviting other leaders, including Nyoro, to observe the free education model in Mathira and consider it as an example of expanding educational access.

The policy in Mathira is expected to reinforce efforts to boost school enrolment, reduce dropout rates, and relieve the financial burden on families, particularly in lower-income communities. Supporters argue that the move could set a precedent for other constituencies to follow as Kenya works toward achieving universal access to secondary education.
