Ann Kananu set to join the female governors' club
Ann Kananu is set to be the first female governor of Nairobi despite former governor Mike Sonko’s efforts to frustrate her swearing-in. This is after a 5 judge bench led by Justice Mohamed Ibrahim termed Sonko’s application to stop Kananu’s swearing-in as premature.
“The court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the appeal given that his main appeal at the Court of Appeal challenging his impeachment has not been heard,” ruled the judges.
The judges, however, noted that the main appeal is still before the appellate court and is set for arguments on November 22, 2021.
If sworn in, Kananu will join the illustrious club of Kenyan female governors, Charity Ngilu of Kitui, Ann Waiguru of Kirinyaga and the late Joyce Laboso of Bomet. Once sworn in, she is expected to choose her deputy who alongside her will govern the capital until the term ends in 2022.
Kananu who has been the acting governor of Nairobi has shown interest in the gubernatorial seat in the 2022 elections.
