Did you know that eating a mango daily could improve your life significantly? Mangoes, which are delicious and rich in vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, contain an enzyme with stomach soothing properties similar to papain in papaya. These comforting enzymes act as a digestive aid and may be partly responsible for that feeling of contentment after eating a mango.
Mangoes are rich in Vitamins A and C, which help prevent night blindness and aid in the growth and repair of body tissues. They also contain potassium and beta-carotene. Mangoes are high in fibre, which helps prevent constipation. Research has shown that dietary fibre has a protective effect against degenerative diseases and may help prevent certain types of cancer. Mangoes are low in calories, fat and sodium and help to lower blood cholesterol levels. An average sized
mango can contain up to 40 percent of your daily fibre requirement.
When choosing a mango, select one that is fleshy, full with a fruity aroma when held near the nose. If you will be eating the mango immediately, get one slightly soft to the touch and yielding to gentle pressure, like a ripe peach. The best- flavoured fruit has a yellow tinge when ripe.
Mangoes can stay up to two weeks if stored well. A good way to ripen mangoes is to place them in a basket, kitchen counter or cabinet. Ripe mangoes can be refrigerated for a few days. If refrigerated for long, they may loose their nutritional value.
