A document that spread rapidly across social media and WhatsApp groups this week, purporting to order all African nationals out of Cambodia by May 31 or face arrest, has been dismissed as a fabrication by the Cambodian government.

The notice had suggested that Cambodia would revoke waivers granted to foreign nationals from Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and other African countries, effective May 31, 2026, and that authorities would begin arresting overstaying foreigners from June 1.

In a formal statement, Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior said two media outlets based in Ghana had published an article headlined “Cambodia Orders Africans with Expired Immigration Waivers to Leave by May 31, 2026,” accompanied by what it described as a falsified notice purportedly issued by the General Department of Immigration. “The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia categorically rejects the fabrication of this public document and the dissemination of such false information,” the statement read.

Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration further stated that “the information on those websites is completely untrue.”

The rejection also came through Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior Spokesperson, who told Xinhua that the notice was “fake news fabricated to distort the situation and mislead domestic and international audiences.”

The Kenyan Ambassador to Thailand, whose embassy also covers Cambodia, has previously been outspoken about disinformation targeting Kenyans in the region. The ambassador’s office oversees consular services for Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia and has previously warned Kenyans not to apply for unverified jobs in those countries.

Parents and families who received the viral document are advised to disregard it. No such expulsion order exists.
