Men would rather talk about anything else under the sun but not penis care, yet it is a vital organ, which if neglected, may lead to skin irritations, infections and bad odour. Due to its significance, the penis commands a high level of respect and care to keep it healthy and functioning. We give you tips on how to keep your little man in good condition.

Gently wash your penis each day: The penis ought to be washed every day just like any other part of the body. Carefully pull back and clean underneath the foreskin (for the uncircumcised), as well as the tip of your penis using only water and very gentle soap and rinse thoroughly. Don’t forget to clean the base of the penis and testicles as well as the area between the testicles and the anus. While you are down there, it is worthwhile to regularly examine your scrotum so as to be aware of any changes such as lumps.

Dry it completely: Gently pat dry the tip of your penis, the area underneath your foreskin and the rest of your penis. Use a clean towel making sure to dry under the foreskin and around the testicles. Be gentle, but make sure it gets as dry as possible. Extra moisture around your genitals can lead to yeast infections and other similar problems.

Wash your underwear regularly: It is unfortunate that some men still recycle their boxers, vests and even socks. This is unhealthy, as it gives room for bacteria and fungi to breed. Ensure you wash your underwear properly, thoroughly rinse and let it to fully dry before wearing them again. This will help to keep infections and bad odour at bay.

Wash your hands before touching your penis: Our hands touch a lot of things and you never know how the different surfaces and microbes they come into contact with react. This is especially important if you have been handling anything that might irritate your penis such as chemicals, chili peppers or heat rub. Washing our hands before touching the penis is as healthy as washing our hands before eating.

Shave your pubic hair: Shaving one’s pubic hair helps in improving penis cleanliness as it becomes easy to wash the area. For those who don’t fancy shaving the pubic hair, you will be required to go an extra mile to maintain penis hygiene compared to those who shave. Heat, sweat and bacteria form around the crotch and remain there for a long time if it gets trapped in the pubic hair, leading to bad odour.

Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity literally steals your manhood and reduces testosterone levels in the body. Abdominal fat contains aromatase, an enzyme that converts your male hormone testosterone to the female hormone oestrogen. You are also more likely to have fatty plaque deposits, which clog up your blood vessels including the artery to the penis, making it harder to obtain and maintain a good erection.

Eat smart: Wholesome and natural foods prevent the buildup of harmful plaque deposits within your blood vessels that compromises blood flow to the penis. Poor dietary choices with meals that are calorie laden and nutritionally empty create clogged arteries and greatly impair sexual function.

Drink and smoke in moderation: Smoking and drinking are one of the known causes of erectile dysfunction. There is evidence that smoking also affects the size of an erection by damaging the penile tissue, ultimately making it less elastic and preventing it from stretching.

Exercise habitually: Apart from the usual exercises such as running and jogging, include pelvic exercises in your schedule. Exercises that target muscles involved in sex including core muscles, pelvic floor muscles and external hip rotators improve sexual performance.
