Ethiopian Airlines to fly three times to New York

Beginning June 2019, Ethiopian Airlines (ET) will fly to New York’s JF Kennedy International Airport.

Earlier this week,  the airline announced that it will introduce three times a week flights to New York’s JFK  International Airport via Abidjan and Ivory Coast  in a bid to add more frequencies and gateways to the USA within the shortest routes.

Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam,  said that the new move is informed by the fact that the US airline is among the most important markets, due to the present of a large African Community and growing business and tourism ties with Africa.

“Our new route structure with additional frequencies to multiple gateways and the opening of new routes to Houston are in response to the market demand. We believe it will provide the best the best market demand. It will also provide the best possible connectivity to over 60 African destinations,” said Tewolde.

The move comes barely weeks after KQ started its daily flights to JFK  Airport and a few months before Rwanda launches its flight. This move may upset these carriers’ plans as the ET’s entry to the JKF route via West Africa will be seen as its attempt to fight off competition from its Nairobi- based rival.
