Former nominated Senator, Joy Gwendo, has been sentenced to two years in jail for fraud and abuse of office charges.

Mrs. Gwendo had pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud following a plea bargain deal she had entered with the state to pay a Kisumu Sacco Sh1.7 million. The first count was abuse of office and two others of issuing bad cheques.

Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti sentenced her to two years in jail for failing to honour the plea bargain.

She admitted to have issued two bad cheques of Sh300,000 and Sh950,000 to Kisumu East Cotton Growers Cooperative Society.

On the abuse of office allegation, Gwendo admitted that she used her position as a state officer to award herself Sh2,226,880 belonging to the Sacco at Chiga parish in Kisumu on October 23, 2016.

The court denied her the right of appeal saying it had considered the mitigation.
