It is a sad moment for the Judiciary as it mourns the death of  Justice David Majanja.

Honourable Majanja breathed his last on Wednesday, July 10, while undergoing surgery at Nairobi hospital.

While confirming his death, the Chief Justice Martha Koome described him as a crucial pillar of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Judiciary at large,

“We are all heartbroken. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary and JSC fraternity during this time of deep sorrow and sadness.” she wrote on her X account.

Justice Majanja was a commissioner of the High Court of Kenya and a well known figure of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Several key notable public figures have mourned his death including President William Ruto.

“I have learnt with great sorrow about the death of the Hon. David A S Majanja, who was a judge of the High Court of Kenya, and a member of the Judicial Service Commission, which occurred earlier today.”

He went on to describe the man as a brilliant lawyer with great integrity and one who had a long career ahead of him.

Hon. Justice Majanja will be remembered for his wise and exemplary rulings in a variety of cases, including declaring the House levy unconstitutional, opposing the implementation of the Digital Service Tax in September 2021, and halting the Huduma Namba (National Integrated Identity Management System) until a comprehensive regulatory framework compliant with constitutional data privacy requirements was enacted.

He was appointed as a High Court Judge in 2011 and has held a variety of positions throughout his career.

He worked at the Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, and Kisii High Courts, the Commercial and Tax Divisions, the Milimani High Court Civil Division and the High Court of Kenya where he served as a Judge and Commissioner until his untimely death .

More details concerning his funeral arrangements shall be provided later.
