How Parents Can Support Their Child After KJSEA Results
The release of the 2025 KJSEA results can feel exciting, but it can also bring a little anxiety for both parents and learners. Under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), KJSEA results are different from the old 8-4-4 system since there are no total scores, no mean scores, and no rankings.
Instead, each subject is assessed individually, and learners are given performance levels that are simply a snapshot of where your child is in their learning journey. For instance:
-
Exceeding Expectations (EE) – Your child is performing above the expected level.
-
Meeting Expectations (ME) – Your child is doing just right, mastering the core competencies.
-
Approaching Expectations (AE) – Your child is close to the expected level but may need some extra support.
- Below Expectations (BE)– Your child is not yet meeting the expected level in this area and may need focused support and guidance to catch up.
Focus on the learning, not the label
It’s easy to get caught up in the words on the report, but remember that these levels are meant to guide learning, not to judge your child. Take time to look at each subject individually. Celebrate the areas where they’re exceeding or meeting expectations, and view areas approaching expectations as opportunities to grow.
Start a conversation
Ask your child how they felt about each subject. Did they enjoy it? Which parts were tricky? This helps you understand their experience, not just the result. A relaxed, open conversation encourages them to share challenges without fear of judgment.
Collaborate with teachers
Teachers can give insight into what each level means for your child and suggest ways to support them at home.
Make a learning plan together
-
Highlight strengths and celebrate progress.
-
Identify subjects or areas that need extra attention.
-
Set realistic, achievable goals for improvement.
Turning results into a positive action plan makes learning exciting instead of stressful.
Keep perspective
Remember, KJSEA is designed to nurture holistic skills, not just academic scores. Critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and curiosity matter just as much as test performance. Your support, encouragement, and understanding are what will help your child thrive.
KJSEA results are a tool, not a verdict. Focus on growth, celebrate effort, and partner with your child and their teachers. With the right support, they can continue to shine in school and beyond.
