President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially launched the 9th edition of Africities 2022 which is expected to run from today 17th May to 21st May 2022. The theme for this year’s edition which is being held in Kisumu city is ” The Role of Intermediary Cities of Africa in the Implementation of Agenda 2030 of the United Nations and the African Union Agenda 2063″.
Some of the issues that will be addressed at the summit include the role of intermediary cities in Africa’s structural transformation, how cities can finance investments, the response to the Covid-19 pandemic in intermediary cities, the population dynamics of the continent and how to limit carbon emission.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure, will chair the first round table discussion comprising current and former heads of state at the conference. More than 10,000 delegates have registered for the event including 5 presidents.

The event will create massive business opportunities for the hotel and transport sector in the city and its environs. Already, hotel operators in Kisumu have increased their workforce to keep up with the increased inflow of international visitors.
Africities is the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) of Africa’s flagship pan-African event held in one of the five regions of Africa every 3 years.
