President Ruto ratifies the IEBC Act 2024
President William Ruto has started a new chapter for Kenya’s democratic history by ratifying the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Act.
This act was signed on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 and is a vision for an electoral process that is more open, responsible and effective.
In his speech, the president expressed his confidence in the new act, that it will provide free and fair elections come 2027.
“I commend the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in shaping the bill and urge all Kenyans to support its implementation,” he said.
Following the General Elections in August 2022, there was an increase in demand for reform and change in the way things were done then hence the creation of the IEBC Act 2024.
The Act’s changes represent a concerted, bipartisan effort to strengthen the electoral framework and restore public confidence.
According to the new Act, the commission will be reorganized and strict standards for the appointment of commissioners introduced.
The restructuring is aimed at achieving IEBC’s independence and ensuring that the next elections will run without interference from third parties.
Additionally, the Act introduces advanced measures for integrating technology into the electoral process. This includes the implementation of reliable systems for voter registration, transmission of results and election monitoring in light of challenges that come with the digital age.
With the help of these technical advancements, mistakes should be minimized, fraud potential decreased and election results should be delivered promptly and precisely.
