Eighty percent of women will struggle with premenstrual syndrome and its uncomfortable symptoms according to a report by Yale University in USA researchers. This is because women’s nervous systems are sensitive to the ups and downs in oestrogen and progesterone that occur naturally every month. However, according to researchers at New York’s Columbia University, snacking on two cups of yoghurt a day can slash these symptoms by 48 percent. “Yoghurt is rich in calcium, a mineral that naturally calms the nervous system, preventing painful symptoms even when hormones are in fluctuation,” says Mary Jane Minkin, a professor of gynaecology at Yale University.
