The Boy Who Cared: Kaluma Boy’s Story
In a small village in Othaya, Nyeri, a remarkable act of kindness unfolded on Sunday, September 28, as thousands of Kenyans converged on the home of 17-year-old Vincent Kaluma, better known online as Kaluma Boy. The young content creator had won the hearts of many—not through viral dances or humor, but by sharing the raw reality of caring for his father, who has been battling a severe illness.
Kaluma’s father suffered a stroke in August 2024, which left him in a coma for three months. When he returned home in December, his condition required constant care, turning the family home into a makeshift hospital. The young teen quickly became the backbone of his family, juggling school, farm work, and the relentless demands of caregiving.
Through TikTok, Kaluma chronicled the everyday struggles of his father’s recovery: from administering medications to dealing with expensive treatments and therapy sessions. He captured moments of exhaustion, worry, and hope with unfiltered honesty, accompanied often by a poignant song that symbolized resilience and brighter days ahead.
His posts struck a chord nationwide. People were moved not only by the hardships he faced but also by his unwavering commitment to his father. Kaluma’s story became a powerful reminder of the strength of family and the impact of sharing one’s journey.
The community’s response culminated on that September Sunday. Kenyans brought gifts and support to Kaluma’s home, turning the quiet village into a hub of generosity. The celebration didn’t stop there. During a church service at JCM Church in Ruiru, Bishop Muthee Kiengei announced that Kaluma Boy had been awarded a full scholarship to East African University, where he will study Sales and Marketing to advance his skills in digital media.
In addition, a fundraising drive raised Sh2 million in just 30 minutes to help his mother, Beatrice Wangechi, start a small business under the name Kaluma’s Boy Enterprise, providing the family with a stable source of income.
Kaluma, overwhelmed by the support, expressed heartfelt gratitude:
