What's in your handbag? 12 must-carry items
I recently tore a sleeve on my way to work and had to walk around with a part of my skin peeping from the light sweater top I was wearing. While I understand my skin’s need for a dose of vitamin D, I also understood that a torn sleeve did not look good on me. Were it not for a female colleague who had some needle and thread in her handbag, I would have had a very long day.
Here are a few items you should always carry in your handbag.
A make-up pack
This is important when you need to touch up your face in between errands. It should contain some lip balm, lipstick, some wipes and some powder in the least.
Hand sanitiser
Even though Covid-19 is not as severe as it was a year ago, please don’t leave your sanitiser.
Needle and thread
If my experience does not convince you, I don’t know what will.
A period pack
Sometimes, Aunty Flo likes to show up unannounced. It’s best to always be prepared. Your period pack should have some clean underwear, some sanitary towels or tampons, some painkillers for the cramps and some lotion to prevent dry hands due to the frequent washing when you are done using the toilet.
Deodorant/perfume
Everyone likes to smell nice. A perfume in your bag comes in handy for after-work meetings that do not give you the time to pass by the house and freshen up.
Mini-first aid kit
Small accidents happen all the time. For instance, you might injure yourself while shredding papers at work. A small first aid kit comes in handy. Your kit does not have to have all the items needed for first aid. At the very least have some painkillers, antiseptic, some sticking plaster (Elastoplast) and some cotton wool and you are good to go.

Breath freshener
Bad breath is a turn-off and a source of embarrassment. Always carry some gum, or mint to help freshen your breath especially after eating.
Hairbrush and pins
Sometimes your hair just doesn’t want to cooperate especially for the naturalistas. A hairbrush and some pins can help you fix your hair and maintain a clean look.
Leso/scarf
As old fashioned as it sounds, a leso or scarf can be used to solve many issues from period stains to bad hair and clothes ripping in all the bad places. Plus when you are working late, it can be a good buffer against the cold.

Phone
No one walks without their phone nowadays
Power bank/charger
Have you ever noticed that everyone seems to call you when your phone’s battery dies? Always have your charger with you or invest in a good power bank and carry it with you as you leave the house. Of course, you must confirm that your power bank is fully charged.
Keys
Avoid the temptation of carrying your keys in your hands as you walk around or putting them in the pockets of your clothes as it’s easy to lose them this way. Your handbag will always be a good bet.
Your handbag is not just an accessory, it can also be a potential life saver with the above items.
