Who am I? How Identity Shapes Young People

Who am I? How Identity Shapes Young People
  • PublishedMarch 13, 2026

For many young people, growing up is not just about school, friendships or career dreams. It is also about answering one difficult question: “Who am I?”

Identity plays a powerful role in shaping how young people see themselves and how they interact with the world around them.

From family values and cultural traditions to religion, school environments, and social media, young people are constantly influenced by various forces that help shape their identity. For parents, understanding these influences is key to guiding their children through one of the most complex stages of life.

One of the strongest influences on identity is family. Children often develop their first sense of belonging through family traditions, language and cultural background. These early experiences shape their understanding of values, behaviour and expectations.

Culture and community also play a major role. In many African societies, identity is closely tied to tribe, language, and community. While this connection can create a strong sense of pride and belonging, it can sometimes also create pressure for young people who are trying to define themselves beyond traditional expectations.

School environments further shape how young people see themselves. Peer groups, academic expectations and social interactions all contribute to identity formation. Teenagers may experiment with different personalities, interests and social groups as they try to discover where they fit in.

The digital world has added another layer to identity development. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram expose young people to global cultures, trends and lifestyles. While this encourages creativity and self-expression, it can also create pressure to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty, success and popularity.

Identity development is a natural part of adolescence. However, when young people feel misunderstood or unsupported, they may struggle with self-esteem, belonging and mental health challenges.

Parents play an important role in helping children navigate this journey. Open conversations, emotional support and allowing children to express themselves can help young people develop a healthy sense of identity.

Identity is not something that develops overnight. It evolves as young people learn more about themselves, their values and the world around them. With guidance, understanding and support from parents, they can grow into confident individuals who embrace what they truly are.
