At least 14 people have died after a Nairobi-bound bus from Mandera rammed onto a stationary lorry in Matuu area, Machakos County.

According to Machakos County Commander, Mohammed Farah Maalim, 14 of the passengers died on the spot while 27 others sustained serious injuries. He added that injured passengers were taken to Matuu Level Four Hospital while critical cases will be ferried to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

“We managed to arrest the lorry driver . He is in custody. we are carrying out investigations . The bus driver escaped and we are looking for him. we urge the owner of the bus to summon him to the police station he doesn’t come.

Passengers who perished in the grisly accident included 10 men, two women and a child.

According to Mr.  Joseph Karanja, Yatta Police Commander, the incident happened a few minutes after 5:00am and confirmed the buss belonged to Medina Company.

He also urged the drivers be more be cautious at night to avoid accidents.

“Drivers should be cautious and more so, those travelling at night to avoid causing avoidable accidents,” he said.
