Supreme Court Judge Njoki Ndung’u opposes lowering sex consent age

Supreme Court judge Njoki Ndung’u has opposed the Court of Appeal proposal to lower the age of consent from 18 to 16 years.

Speaking during the launch of the Women Led Social Justice Centre in Mwandoni area in Mombasa County, Judge Njoki, the proposal is ill advised and outrageous and will increase sexual abuse crimes.

“I cannot accept and agree that position. Women should not accept that decision because our young girls are not ready at that age to be parents,” said Justice Ndung’u

In March 26 this year, three Court of Appeal judges, Roselyn Nambuye, Daniel Musinga and Patrick Kiage, had proposed lowering of sex consent age saying it is long overdue as men were languishing  in jail  for sleeping with teens “who were willing to be and appeared to be adults.”

The Judge also called on women to report cases of mistreatment and violence to the police to avert the rising homicide cases against women.

“We want to urge women to speak up and report any cases of women violation. Let’s not wait until somebody is killed that is when we report,” urged Ndung’u.

UK ambassador to Kenya Nic Hailey and Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji were also present at the launch.
