A Guide to Preserving your Flowers beyond Valentine’s

A Guide to Preserving your Flowers beyond Valentine’s
  • PublishedFebruary 17, 2025

Did you know that your beautiful bouquet of flowers can last well beyond Valentine’s weekend? Freshly cut flowers typically last a good week to 10 days, but with proper care, they can last even longer. Below is your guide to keeping your memory of love alive a little longer:

Water

First things first, water your flowers. Wilting begins immediately after cutting when air enters the flower, so it is vital that you water them as soon as possible. Very few flowers can last long hours without water. Most average a short lifespan of 3-4 hours. Flowers like carnations, lilies, and chrysanthemums naturally stay fresh longer, but most like roses and tulips wilt faster sans water.

Temperature

Room temperature is ideal for many things, including the life of your flowers. Keep your water at room temperature, ensuring your vase is three-quarters full to keep your flowers well watered.

Cut two inches off the flower stems

Before placing the flowers in water, use garden shears or regular scissors to cut two inches off the stems. This allows for water absorption, prolonging the life of your flowers. Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle to increase the surface area for water uptake. Additionally, re-cut the stems regularly every 2-3 days to increase their life span and keep them looking fresh and healthy.

Feed your flowers some floral preservative

Florists and supermarkets sell floral preservatives (also called flower food) that contain all the essential nutrients that help flowers last. You can buy them from any outlet near you. Conversely, make your own flower food by mixing apple cider vinegar, sugar, and some bleach into a water-filled vase.

The cool, calm place

Avoid placing your fresh flowers in direct sunlight, near hot appliances, or near open windows. Heat reduces their lifespan by accelerating the wilting process and promoting respiration.

Care for your flowers

Be sure to use clean, fresh water daily and to frequently clean your vase every day. Dirty water allows bacteria to thrive, which promotes wilting.

These tips are certain to have your flowers healthier, prettier, and fresher for longer!
