A community parenting program, Strengthening Partnerships for Nurturing Care in Homa Bay County, is encouraging fathers to take an active role in raising their children.
The ongoing initiative trains fathers to participate in childcare and clinic visits to improve the health of children under five years.
Despite being a region rich in food production, many children in Homa Bay County have suffered from malnutrition. Experts found that the challenge was not only about food availability but also about feeding practices, lack of knowledge and minimal involvement of fathers.
The program trains fathers to participate in daily childcare activities such as immunisation clinics, learning about nutrition and supporting early childhood learning. Focus is particularly on the first 1000 days, a critical window for growth and brain development.
Since its first implementation, results have been promising. Children whose fathers actively participate in the program are more likely to receive vaccines on the scheduled time and show improved growth indicators. Health workers report a notable decline in malnutrition cases in some communities. Fathers have gained stronger connections with their children and improved connections at home.
For mothers, the change has been transformative. Many say they now feel supported in childcare responsibilities, reducing stress and improving family harmony. Fathers report a deeper understanding of the challenges mothers face, creating a more supportive family environment.
Community leaders believe the Homa Bay County initiative could serve as a role model for other counties. The program proves that parenting works best when both parents share responsibilities. When fathers move from the sidelines into daily caregiving, children are healthier, families are stronger and communities benefit as a whole.
