Cancer and Pneumonia were leading causes of death in 2021

Data from the Kenya Vital Statistics Report released in 2021, shows that sudden Cancer and Pneumonia are still the leading causes of death among men and women. However, more men that women died in 2021.

According to the report, 131,599 men died in 2021 which translated to a 25.9 per cent increase from the previous year. The figures recorded for women also rose from 19,481 in 2020 to 100,345.

The report further showed that sudden death at home was the third leading cause of death among men. Among women, however, sudden was ranked sixth with the leading causes of death being Cancer and Pneumonia.

The data was released at a time when the country’s life expectancy continues to decline. Nevertheless, men still have a lower life expectancy at 60.6 years compared to 66.5 years for women.
