Healing and Self-Care Tips for New Moms During Postpartum
  • PublishedJuly 19, 2024

Welcoming a baby into the world is an incredible experience, but the postpartum period can be equally challenging. The postpartum/ postnatal period refers to the period following childbirth when the mother’s body, emotions, and daily life adjust to the changes of having a new baby and generally lasts about six weeks. It involves physical healing, emotional adjustments, and the establishment of routines with the newborn.

As your body heals and adjusts, self-care becomes crucial. Here are some essential tips to help you navigate this demanding phase with ease:

Prioritize Rest and Sleep

Sleep deprivation is common with a newborn, but rest is vital for recovery.

Try to sleep when your baby sleeps, even if it’s just short naps.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your partner, family or friends to assist with household chores or watch the baby while you rest.

Perineal and C-Section Care

For vaginal births, keep the perineal area clean and dry.

Use warm water to rinse after using the bathroom and consider sitz baths to soothe discomfort.

For C-section recoveries, follow your doctor’s instructions on wound care and avoid heavy lifting.

Gentle Exercise

While strenuous activity should be avoided initially, gentle exercise can promote healing and improve your mood.

A new mom can start with short walks and gradually increase her activity level as her strength returns.

Pelvic floor exercises, like Kegels, can help restore muscle tone.

Nourish Your Body

Your body needs extra nutrients to heal and produce milk if you’re breastfeeding.

You can focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats; small, frequent meals can help maintain your energy levels.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Regular Medical Checkups

For C-Section moms, it is advised to attend all postpartum checkups to ensure your body is healing properly.

Discuss any concerns or symptoms with your healthcare provider, no matter how small they may seem.

Regular checkups can help detect and address potential issues early.

New moms should also take mental breaks by carving out moments for themselves to enjoy a warm bath, read a book or practise relaxation techniques.
