Kirinyaga Teacher Arrested for Alleged Assault of Two Deaf Learners

Kirinyaga Teacher Arrested for Alleged Assault of Two Deaf Learners
  • PublishedMarch 4, 2026

On 3rd March 2026, a shocking case emerged from the Kerugoya School for the deaf in Kirinyaga County.

A 43-year-old male teacher was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting two learners with hearing disabilities, including an eight-year old child. The abuse came to light when one child returned home and tried to communicate the distress using sign language. Medical examiners reportedly confirmed that abuse had occurred.

The allegations highlight a painful truth that sometimes the adults we trust to protect children can be their greatest threat. For vulnerable children, especially those with disabilities, the consequences of such abuse are severe, leaving emotional and psychological scars.

Kirinyaga women representative Hon Njeri Maina called the case a “grave violation of children’s rights” and urged a thorough investigation. Parents and advocacy groups are demanding stricter child protection measures in schools, particularly those serving children with special needs.

While most teachers are dedicated and caring, misuse of authority, whether through abuse, intimidation or neglect, can have devastating effects. Children often hesitate to report misconduct, making parental vigilance and open communication essential.

Parents can protect their children by understanding school policies, including staff vetting and reporting procedures. They should maintain open communication so children can feel safe sharing concerns. They should also watch for changes in behaviour such as fear or reluctance to attend school and report any suspected abuse promptly to the authorities.

This case is a reminder that teachers should be protectors and mentors, not sources of harm. Parents, schools and communities must work together to ensure children’s safety, especially for those who may struggle to speak out. When trust is broken, vigilance becomes the most important tool in safeguarding children.
