Murang’a County Governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata has continued his administration’s strong focus on maternal healthcare by rolling out the distribution of MamaKits to expectant and new mothers across the county.
The MamaKit is a maternal support package designed to encourage pregnant women to attend antenatal care (ANC) clinics and promote safe deliveries in health facilities. Under the initiative, which forms part of the broader Kang’ataCare health program, eligible mothers who consistently attend antenatal visits receive the kits as an incentive and practical support.
In one major distribution exercise announced in July 2025, the county government planned to issue over 4,500 MamaKits to mothers who had diligently attended antenatal clinics. The move aims to reduce maternal and neonatal complications by promoting facility-based deliveries and better health-seeking behavior among pregnant women.
What is in the MamaKit?
Typical Mama Kits distributed under the program include essential items for both mother and newborn, such as
Baby clothes and blankets
Diapers
Thermometer
Soap and hygiene items
Other basic newborn care supplies
The kits are intended to ease the financial burden on families during the critical postpartum period and signal the county’s commitment to supporting young families.
By linking support to antenatal attendance, the county seeks to ensure mothers and babies receive timely medical attention, contributing to lower maternal and infant mortality rates.
