Valentine’s eve has been dubbed Galentine’s day, a tradition that was picked up some years ago, and we are willing to take advantage of it.

What is Galentine’s Day about?

Galentine’s day is a made-up holiday (aren’t they all?) that involves celebrating unique bonds shared by women with their best friends. The main point of this holiday is to celebrate the love between lady friends. So every February 13th, you and your girlfriends should leave behind your partners and kick it with your besties, because why not?

Why should you indulge?

Let’s be honest, don’t you like sitting with your friends, letting your hair down, indulging in some gossip, brunch, and downing a glass of wine while at it? Friendships are increasingly playing a consolidating role in our communities and are the side dishes to the main buffet- kids, family, and marriage.

These friendships define people’s sense of confidence in the world, and during a period of geographic mobility and emergent adulthood, these friendships provide meaning and stability to people’s lives. The best friendships function not to substitute your family or intimate relationships but complement them.

Consider gifting

In this era, any opportunity to give and receive gifts is as good as any. So, even though traditionally it was not a thing, gifting can be a part of this day. The good thing about made-up things is you can always make more stuff up as you go.

Therefore, if you want to surprise your girl with a Galentine’s day gift, then, by all means, go ahead! Look for thoughtful gifts that highlight the meaning and uniqueness of your friendship and bring your gals to tears- happy tears. This will be fun and will be a good memory. Include a note or a card too.

Whichever way you decide to celebrate this holiday with your friends, ensure you tell your girls what they mean to you and how grateful you are that they are in your life.

This is a bonus! Because it would make for funnier stories in the future when you reflect on this day.
