Tips to Get a Healthy Night’s Sleep Before the Christmas Morning Rush
  • PublishedDecember 24, 2025

The excitement of Christmas morning is unmatched for kids and sometimes, for parents too. But all that anticipation can come at a cost: restless nights, tossing and turning, and mornings where everyone feels more tired than festive. Ensuring a healthy night’s sleep before the big day is essential for keeping spirits high and energy levels steady. Here are some practical tips for parents to help the whole family get the rest they need.

1. Stick to a familiar bedtime routine
Children thrive on routine, and Christmas Eve can easily disrupt normal sleep schedules. Try to maintain your usual bedtime rituals bath, storytime, or quiet reading even if the excitement is palpable. Consistency helps signal to your child’s body that it’s time to wind down, even amidst holiday excitement.

2. Limit stimulating activities in the evening
Christmas Eve often includes movies, video games, or late-night wrapping. While these activities are fun, they can interfere with sleep. Consider winding down with calm, screen-free activities like reading, gentle music, or coloring.

3. Keep the bedroom environment cozy and calm
A dark, cool, and quiet room promotes better sleep. Soft lighting, comfortable bedding, and a cool temperature can help children (and adults!) relax. If your home is bustling with holiday prep, consider white noise or a fan to drown out background noise.

4. Avoid sugar and caffeine close to bedtime
Holiday treats are everywhere, but sugary snacks and caffeinated drinks before bed can make it difficult for kids to settle down. Encourage a healthy snack if needed—like a banana or a small bowl of yogurt rather than candy or soda.

5. Practice relaxation techniques
Simple techniques such as deep breathing, gentle stretching, or listening to calming music can help ease the body into sleep. For younger children, you can guide them through a “holiday story meditation,” imagining peaceful winter scenes or cozy Christmas moments.

6. Plan for early Christmas morning activities
If you plan to wake up early, prepare your home in advance. Laying out gifts, organizing stockings, or prepping breakfast the night before can reduce morning stress, allowing everyone to sleep a little longer.

7. Be realistic and forgiving
Even with the best preparations, some children (and parents!) may struggle to sleep. That’s okay. A few disrupted hours won’t ruin the magic of Christmas. Focus on creating joyful moments, and make rest a priority where possible.

A restful night before Christmas sets the tone for a joyful, energized morning. By keeping routines familiar, minimizing stimulation, and creating a calm environment, parents can ensure that both they and their children greet Christmas morning refreshed, happy, and ready to enjoy the holiday together.
