The death of Nobel Laureate Prof Wangari Maathai from ovarian cancer has sent shock waves amongst women. While the number of women getting cervical smears has increased, many women mistakenly believe the all-clear after a smear test also rules out ovarian cancer.

A pap smear only rules out cervical cancer. Ovarian cancer is more common than cervical cancer and women need to be on their guard. Symptoms include pelvic or abdominal pain, bloating, feeling full or difficulty in eating. You should see a doctor without delay if you are at all concerned, as survival chances are higher if the cancer is detected early
