Honest Family Conversations to Reflect on How Everyone Has Grown This Year
Without a proper record, events of the past get a little murky. Unless they are totally unique or pivotal, we don’t pay them much mind. Here are five prompts to keep honest family conversations going and reflect on how everyone has grown this year.
What’s your balance sheet
Balance sheets keep a tally of the transactions made. Whether spiritual, emotional, or physical. Auditing your experiences and habits over the past year is one way to take accountability, not only for the hurt caused but for the good impacted as well.
This way we are able to see patterns and recognize how our actions over time are influenced by our upbringing and environment.
What I’ve gained
New connections, additional material possessions, and even knowledge qualify as gains in the realm of achievements. If the year didn’t quite turn out the way we expected it to, appreciating the little things is a holistic way to approach disappointment as the year comes to a close.
What I’ve lost
At the beginning of every year we are bombarded with positive messages about how we will take the next year by the horns. The determination to make things go our way. We look to the future with optimism, but realistically accounting for the pitfalls we’ve come across is more open-minded.
Small and big losses define who we are, and although we don’t have to dwell on them, factoring them in as probabilities helps us see that they are likely to happen again.
What I’d like to accomplish
Every end of year the human race finds new ways to reinvent itself. New Year’s resolutions, fireworks, and time with those who matter.
There are some projects that feel more successful only if they are out of reach
Glossed over by the fact that they are slotted for sometime in the future, and that’s human nature.
How I’ll go about it
Some things appear better in memory, an aesthetic dream that gives us hope for tomorrow. But some of the best thought-out plans shrivel up because of lack of proper planning. Conception starts in the mind, but strategy is in the days that lead up to it.
This year, you and your family deserve all the honesty they can get. After all it’s free
