The murder suspects in the Kiambu killings Lawrence Warunge and his girlfriend Sarah Muthoni will remain in police custody for the next two weeks.

This is to allow for the completion of the murder investigations. The ruling was made by Kiambu Magistrate Patricia Gichohi on Monday morning. Warunge and Muthoni will therefore be detained in Gigiri and Muthaiga police stations respectively.

Warunge, a second-year student at Mount Kenya University, has confessed to killing his family members, alleging that they all spoke ill against him. The 22-year-old told police officers that he did some extensive research to identify the best ways to commit the crime. Warunge also got inspiration from the British thriller series ‘Killing Eve’.

Baby Pendo’s father: Let my child’s blood be the last to be shed in a general election
Baby Pendo was killed by police during post-election violence on August 11, 2017. The violence erupted after the presidential elections were annulled by the Supreme Court.

According to a police report, Warunge killed a handyman, James Kinyanjui, who lived a few metres from the main house. Warunge then attacked his mother Anne Wanjiku who was in the kitchen cooking. He then pounced on his 12-year old brother who responded to his mother’s distress call.

The next target was Warunge’s father Nicholas Warunge who attempted to escape by jumping off their balcony. Warunge then killed his 13-year-old cousin who was hiding under his bed. The MKU student told the police that he stabbed his cousin with a nine-inch knife despite the child helplessly pleading that he spares him.

To ensure that the family members did not survive, Warunge hit his targets on the head with a metal bar, stabbed them several times on the chest and finished off by slitting their throats.

Government bans journalists from visiting schools
Senior government officials have instructed regional and county education directors to discourage teachers from allowing journalists into schools.

After committing the murders, Warunge headed to Njikase village in Mai-Mahiu where he was staying with his girlfriend. In an attempt to hide the evidence, Warunge threw the knife he had used to commit the crime, his bloody clothes and a house key into a public toilet.

He burned the other items such as a mobile phone in a nearby valley.

His girlfriend Sarah Muthoni has been put into police custody so that she can aid in investigations.
