Illegal herders who have invaded private ranches in Laikipia County have been given a week to vacate or be flushed  out. Speaking yesterday after a consultative meeting in Naibor,Laikipia County, interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i said that it is imperative for the herders from Isiolo, Baringo, and Samburu counties to leave for security to be restored.

“If you are here in Laikipia illegally, leave voluntarily, failure to which the government will do what it is supposed to do. Do not expect us to come to hug and kiss you,” Matiang’i said.

The CS added that the government was planning to deploy a special unit of police officers to a buffer zone covering over 80,000 acres of land in Kirimon, Laikipia-Samburu border to prevent invasion of herders.

Matiang’i also promised herders that the government would embark on an off-take programme to buy animals from these herders through the Kenya Meat Commission in order to ease pressure.

The meeting was  attended by Laikipia Governor Nderitu Mureithi and Laikipia North MP Sarah Lekolel, and residents of Laikipia, mainly ranchers.
