7 Signs Your Toddler Has Higher Emotional Intelligence
As parents, we often focus on milestones like walking and talking, but Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is one of the greatest predictors of long-term success. Even at age two or three, children begin showing sophisticated signs of emotional awareness.
They attempt to comfort others
If your toddler sees a peer crying and offers them a toy or a pat on the back, they are demonstrating empathy. They can recognise and respond to the feelings of others.
They use feeling words
Toddlers with developing EQ begin to move beyond mad or sad. You might hear them say they are “scared,” “surprised,” or “frustrated.”
They can wait
Impulse control is a core pillar of EQ. If your child can wait 30 seconds for a snack without a total meltdown, their self-regulation muscles are good.
Curiosity about others
Does your child watch people’s faces closely? This social mirroring shows they are trying to decode non-verbal cues and understand social dynamics.
They seek connection after a tantrum
High-EQ toddlers often seek reconnection after an emotional outburst. They might want a hug or to sit near you, showing they value the relationship over the conflict.
They mimic pro-social behaviour
When you see your toddler feeding their teddy bear or putting a doll to sleep, they are practising nurturing, a key component of emotional maturity.
They recognise their own triggers
A toddler who says they want to go home when overstimulated shows incredible self-awareness. They are learning to identify their internal state before a breakdown occurs.
