Going Back to Work After a Long Holiday: Tips to Transition Smoothly
  • PublishedJanuary 4, 2026

Most of us closed work on 19th December and are scheduled to return tomorrow, 5th January. If you’re feeling stressed like me, you’re not alone. Coming back after a long holiday can feel overwhelming; emails have piled up, tasks are waiting, and the relaxed holiday rhythm feels far away.

Here’s how to make the transition easier:

Plan ahead

Before your first day back, take a few minutes to review your schedule, set priorities, and list the tasks that need immediate attention. A clear plan reduces anxiety and helps you focus.

Start the day calmly

Treat the first day back as a gentle re-entry. Arrive a little earlier, organise your workspace, and take a few minutes to prepare mentally. Avoid rushing; it sets a stressful tone.

Tackle tasks strategically

Start with smaller, manageable tasks to regain momentum, then move on to larger projects. Checking off achievable items builds confidence and reduces overwhelm.

Manage expectations

Be realistic about what you can accomplish in the first few days. Communicate priorities with colleagues or supervisors, so you’re not overloaded.

Keep the holiday spirit alive

Incorporate small reminders of your holiday photos, souvenirs, or even a favourite snack to maintain positivity and balance.

Take breaks

Short breaks throughout the day help your mind reset and prevent fatigue. Even five minutes to stretch, breathe, or walk outside makes a difference.

Takeaway

Returning to work after a long holiday doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning, realistic expectations, and intentional breaks, you can ease back into your routine while holding onto some of that holiday calm.
